Luther racked up 502 yards of total offense en route to a 35-33 season opening victory over Presentation College (S.D.) in Carlson Stadium. The win was the first time since 2006 that the Norse have posted a victory in the season opener.
Three Norse rushers went over the 100-yard mark as the offensive unit produced 447 yards on the ground. Quarterback JJ Sirios threw the football just four times, but one was 41-yard touchdown pass to Alex Hain with six second remaining in the first half that gave the Norse a 21-14 halftime lead.
Sirios also scored what proved to be the game winner, a 12-yard scamper that capped off a 99-yard, 15-play drive that ate up 7:18 on the clock. Sirios led all rushers with 141 yards on 25 carries. Josh Vos tallied 107 yards on 22 carries, while Hain ended the afternoon with 105 yards on 12 carries.
Matt Larson led the Norse defensive unit with 10 tackles. Aric Elton and Matt Scheidle were next with nine and eight respectively. Dan Wheelock, who was credited with seven tackles, tallied two sacks.
Next week, Luther travels to St. Olaf College for a game that will begin at 1:00 p.m. in Northfield, Minn.
