It took 110 minutes and a shoot out for Luther to secure a trip to the NCAA III National Tournament round of 16 this afternoon in the valley.
Luther and UW-Superior, who entered the match with a 10-match win streak, played to a 1-1 double overtime tie. Will Overberg gave the Norse a 1-0 lead at 22:13 of the first half, assisted by Ben Sizelove (2). Overberg's goal was his seventh of the year. Late in the half, the Norse picked up a red card at 40:48, that meant that Luther would play short the rest of the match.
The Norse held the Yellowjackets scoreless until 85:59 when Scott Wilson scored his 17th goal of the year, off a corner kick by Blake Perry.
Neither team was able to find the back of the net during the two 10 minute overtime periods.
In the shootout, Superior changed keepers and sent Ulrik Lager to go against Norse keeper Carson Davenport.
Colin Hughes started the shoot out with a make; he was followed by Gustavo Barbieri of UWSP with a make; Marco Vila gave the Norse a 2-1 lead; Davenport stopped Eric Watson; Ben Keller gave the Norse a 3-1 advantage; Davenport stopped Wilson and the Norse needed just one more make to secure the victory. Harry Merz found the left corner of the net.
With the shoot out victory, Luther advances to the round of 16 for the second year in a row and the fifth time in school history.
Luther will play Ohio Wesleyan in the next round. On the other side of the bracket will be Calvin and North Park. North Park will be the host and the matches will be played on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 22-23.
