Game One - Cornell College (IA) 3, Luther 2
Grinnell College is hosting the 2019 ACM Tournament. Luther started the two-day, three-match tournament facing Cornell College (IA). The Rams posted a 3-2 victory.
Cornell won set one 25-14. Luther responded with wins in sets two and three 25-23, 25-20 respectively. The Rams sent the match in to the fifth and final set winning set four 25-21. The Rams sealed the victory with a 15-13 win in set five.
The Rams controlled the net through out the match posting 12 blocks to the Norse four. Cornell had an attack percentage of .250, while Luther's was .114.
Paige Yontz led the Norse attack with a career high 20 kills. She also recorded a double-double thanks to a team high 16 digs. Sam Sixta also tallied a double-double dishing out 34 assists and recording 15 digs. Sixta also led the team with four ace serves. Paige Steward was the only other Norse to reach double digits in kills with 10.
The loss gives Luther an overall record of 2-3.
Game Two - Luther 3, Carleton College (MN) 1
Luther completed the first day of the ACM Tournament with a 3-1 victory over the Knights of Carleton College. After losing the first set 25-21, the Norse answered with three consecutive set victories of 25-20, 25-23 and 25-22.
Paige Steward led a balanced offensive attack with 10 kills. Sydnee Schreier was next with nine, followed by Paige Yontz with eight. Rachael Luebbe and Jess Callahanwere next with seven kills each. Sam Sixta once again had a double-double providing 33 assists and recording 10 digs. Anna Jenewein led the defensive efforts with 16 digs.
The win levels Luther's overall record to 3-3. Carleton fell to 1-6.
Game Three - Grinnell College 3, Luther 0
Grinnell College swept Luther in the final game of the ACM Tournament by a final of 3-0. The Pioneers posted set victories of 25-19, 26-24 and 25-19.
Grinnell held Luther to an attack percentage of .056. Paige Yontz led the Norse attack with seven kills. Paige Steward was next with six.
The loss gives Luther an overall record of 3-4. Grinnell remained unbeaten and is now 8-0.
Luther will begin its home schedule on Thursday, Sept. 12 when it will host Augsburg College at 7:00 p.m.
All-Tournament Team: Paige Steward and Sam Sixta were named to the seven-member all-tournament team. Also named all-tournament was Kaylin Kuhn and Rachel Woock of Grinnell; Sydney Meeker, and Alissa McEndaffer of Cornell; and Inger Shelton of Carleton.
