For those that were in the Regents Center tonight they watched one of the most exciting games of the season. Luther prevailed over Central 58-55, in a first round game of the American Rivers Conference Tournament.
Central the No. 6 seed, trailed by as many as 14 points early in the first quarter and battled back to take its only lead of the game (49-48) with 6:25 left in the fourth. A minute later, the game was tied for the final time (51-51) thanks to a jumper by Central's Amanda Smith. The Norse outscored the Dutch 7-4 in the final five minutes, with four of the seven points coming from the free throw line, to secure the victory.
Laura Hamilton led the Norse attack with 19 points. Madilyn Heinke produced a double-double collecting a game high 11 rebounds and adding 10 points. Sarah Holtz was the third Norse in double digits also with 10.
Central's Kelsea Hurley led all scorers with 20 points. Huley was 8-of-11 from the field, that included a 4-of-6 effort from behind the three-point line. Maci Gambell and Kendall Brown also tallied double figures with 11 and 10 respectively.
These two teams split during the regular season with each team winning at home. Central was making its first appearance in the conference tournament since 2005 and seventh overall. Luther, that has qualified for the 21-year old tournament every year but three (2010, 2011, 2012), advanced to the semifinals for the 13th time in program history. The Norse are now 14-4 at home in conference tournament play.
Luther (15-9) will travel to No. 2 seed Loras College (22-3) on Thursday, Feb. 27. Start time will be 7:00 p.m.
