It took an extra five minutes of play this afternoon in the Regents Center to decide a winner for the final regular season game of the American Rivers Conference schedule. Luther prevailed 79-72 over Coe and finished alone in third place in the league standings with a mark of 12-4. Coe finished tied for fourth with Simpson with a record of 10-6.
Coe led 33-29 at halftime and extended its lead to 42-33 midway through the third quarter. The Norse put together a 14-4 run and led 47-46 entering the fourth frame.
In the fourth, Luther held a 60-52 advantage with five minutes remaining. Coe made four three-pointers down the stretch and led 64-62 with 40 seconds left in the game. Madi Spence was fouled with nine ticks left on the clock and calmly made two free throws that sent the game in to overtime.
In the extra frame, Luther never trailed, outscoring Coe 15-8 en route to the victory.
Coe was led by Madiline Wilkins and Jackie Feldt who both scored 21.
The win gives Luther an overall record of 14-9, while Coe fell to 15-10.
Luther will be the No. 3 seed for the six-team American Rivers Conference Tournament that begins next Tuesday, Feb. 25. The Norse will host the No. 6 seed Central College. Start time will be announced.
The winner of this first round game will advanced to the semifinals and will travel to No. 2 seed Loras College. The semifinal round will take place on Thursday, Feb. 27.
