It was a battle for first place tonight in the Regents Center and when the dust settled nationally ranked No. 9 Wartburg defeated Luther 79-59.
Wartburg entered the game leading the NCAA III in field goal shooting percentage and opened the game shooting 55.6% in the first quarter and led 26-13. The Knights finished the evening connecting on 48.4%, right at their average for the year.
Trailing 55-43 at the end of the third frame, Luther pulled to within nine points twice, the last (57-48) with 7:33 left in the game. The Knights responded with a 22-11 run down the stretch to secure the win.
Ten different players scored for the Knights led by Tori Hazard and Kaitlyn Volesky with 16 each.
The trio of Laura Hamilton, Sarah Holtz and Madilyn Heinke all tallied double digits for the Norse. Holtz finished with 12, Hamilton had 11 and Heinke chipped in 10. Maggie Anderson was credited with nine and Jenna Uphoff came off the bench and tallied eight.
The loss drops Luther into third place in the American Rivers Conference standings with a mark of 9-3, 11-8 overall. Wartburg remains in a two-way tie with Loras College in first place with a record of 10-2.
Luther returns to action this Saturday, Feb. 8, when it will host Nebraska Wesleyan University. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
