Luther remained in a tie atop the American Rivers Conference standings after defeating Simpson College 73-63 tonight in Cowles Fieldhouse. The Norse have now won 10 of their last 12 games and also snapped the Storm 11-game win streak.
Luther held a 22-19 lead after the first frame. The Norse put together a 13-1 run in the final 4:36 of the second quarter and open up a 10-point lead at the half 38-28.
Simpson was able to pull to within five points a couple of times in the final two frames, but the Luther efforts at the free throw line proved to be huge down the stretch. The Norse connected on 7-of-8 in the final 47 seconds to secure the victory. Luther finished the night 17-of-24 from the charity stripe.
Sarah Holtz led the Norse attack recording a double-double. Holtz tallied 24 points and collected 10 rebounds, both game highs.
Madilyn Heinke also tallied double digits with 13. Eleven of her total came in the second half. Jenna Uphoff added a spark off the bench with a career high nine points, after connecting on 3-of-4 attempts from behind the arch.
The Storm were led by the trio of Kia Rasmussen with 15, Cameron Kincaid with 13 and Cassie Nash with 10.
Luther is now in a three-way tie for first place with Wartburg and Loras at 8-2. Simpson fell to 7-3 in league play.
Luther returns to action this Saturday, Feb. 1, when it will host Buena Vista University. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. in the Regents Center.
