For the second time this season Luther has defeated nationally ranked No. 8 Loras College. This afternoon in Dubuque, the Norse outscored the Duhawks 33-16 in the fourth quarter, to secure a 76-66 victory. This game had 14 lead changes and seven ties.
Luther took the lead for good (62-60) with 3:50 remaining, when Sarah Holtz made her first basket of the game and finished the frame with 13.
Laura Hamilton had a double-double leading all scorers with a career high 22 points and grabbing a game high 10 boards. Hamilton was 8-of-12 from the field and 6-of-8 from the free throw line.
The Duhawks had five players in double digits. Courtney Schnoor and Macenzie Kraemer finished with 13 each, while Riiley Eckhart had 12, and Kari Fitzpatrick and Marissa Schroeder both chipped in 10.
Luther won the battle of the boards 33-23 and outscored Loras 46-32 in the paint and 17-12 off turnovers. The Norse also shot 52.8% while holding Loras to 37.7%.
Following today's American Rivers Conference action, it is crowded atop the league standings. Luther, Loras, Wartburg and Simpson are all tied at 7-2.
Today's victory was the second in a row for the Norse who are now 9-7 over. The Duhawks 10-game win streak was snapped and they are now 16-2 overall.
Up next, Luther travels to Simpson College on Wednesday, Jan. 29. The Storm are the hottest team in the league as they have won 11 in a row. Tip-off in Indianola is slated for 5:30 p.m.
