Nationally ranked No. 8 Wartburg College snapped Luther's seven-game win streak tonight at Levick Arena. The Knights defeated the Norse 80-69.
The second quarter proved costly for the Norse as they were 3-for-10 from the field and produced seven points, after trailing the Knights by five at the end of the first quarter. Wartburg dropped 19 points in the second frame and led at halftime 35-18.
Trailing by 19 (60-41) early in the fourth quarter, Luther battled back and pulled to within 10 (62-52) with 5:58 left in the game, but it was as close as it would get the rest of the way.
Madilyn Heinke and Sarah Holtz led the Norse attack with 16 points each. Laura Hamilton provided 15 points and dished out four assists. Hamilton entered the game needing two assists to set the school record that was held by Amanda Smith (99-02) with 350. Following tonigh't effort, Hamilton has a career total of 353. Her 15 points gives her a career total of 991.
Wartburg was led by Amanda Brainerd and Payton Draper who both scored a game high 20 points. Brainerd did the majority of her damage from behind the arch connecting on 4-of-9 attempts.
Coe defeated Nebraska Wesleyan 86-60 tonight in Lincoln, Neb. The combination of Luther's loss and Coe's victory resulted in a four-way tie atop the league standings. Luther, Loras, Wartburg and Coe are now all 5-1 in the A-R-C.
