The Luther College women’s basketball team set a school record for points in a game, defeating Martin Luther College 113-48 this afternoon in New Ulm, Minn. The win was the fourth consecutive victory for the Norse in what was their final non-conference game of the season. The total broke the previous scoring record of 108 points set against Upper Iowa in the 1988-89 season and North Central College (IL) during the 2013-14 campaign.
The Norse started the game on an 11-0 run over the first 1:32 of the game and lead 40-9 at the end of the first quarter. Luther extended the lead to 63-24 at halftime.
Sarah Holtz led the Norse with 24 points. She also collected seven rebounds and had five steals. Kristen Elliott scored a career high 23 points, connecting on 9-of-13 from the field, that included 3-of-6 from three-point range. Grace Prokosch contributed 13 points and six rebounds and Madi Spence had 12 points, five rebounds and four blocked shots. Laura Hamilton also tallied double digits with 11 points and added six steals, six assists and five rebounds.
Luther’s defense forced the Knights into 48 turnovers that included 28 steals, three shy of the single game school record. The Norse scored 55 points off those turnovers and also held Martin Luther to 31% shooting from the field.
With the victory the Norse improved to 4-5. They will return to action on Jan. 4, with an American Rivers Conference game at Buena Vista University. Start time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
