For the second time in 10 days, the women's basketball team has defeated a nationally ranked team. This afternoon, Luther defeated No. 25 UW-Platteville by a final of 61-57.
Luther trailed just once in this ball game, when the Pioneers Maddy Williams scored the first basket of the game at the 8:33 mark. The Norse responded by outscoring the Pioneers 18-4 and held an 18-6 lead at the end of the first quarter. Platteville outscored Luther 20-15 in the second frame but still trailed 33-26 at halftime.
In the third frame, the Pioneers tied the game (39-39) with 3:47 remaining, but the Norse answered the 13-6 run with a 14-4 run of their own and led 53-43 with 10 minutes left to play.
The Pioneers did outscore the Norse 14-8 in the final frame and pulled to within two (57-55) with 1:03 remaining, but it was as close as they would get the rest of the way. A lay-up by Maggie Anderson and two free throws by Laura Hamilton secured the victory.
Hamilton finished the afternoon with 16 points, seven rebounds, six assists and three steals, all team highs. Madi Spence also reached double figures with 13 points. Sarah Holtz added nine and Madilyn Heinke chipped in eight.
The Pioneers were led by Maiah Domask who recorded a double-double with 17 points and 16 rebounds. Morgan Horstman also tallied 17 points.
The win was the third in a row for the Norse who are now 3-5 overall. Platteville fell to 6-2.
Luther will wrap up its non-conference schedule after finals next week. The Norse will travel to New Ulm, Minn., to play Martin Luther College on Friday, Dec. 20. Tip-off will take place at 2:00 p.m.
