Luther snapped a five-game losing streak and posted its first conference win of the season, defeating Central College tonight in the Regents Center by a final of 64-62.
With 6:40 remaining in the game and trailing the Dutch by seven (43-50), the Norse put together a 17-4 run and led by six (60-54) with 1:41 left on the clock. Central battled back to within one (63-62) with six seconds left in the game. Gage Thompson made the first of two free throws with three seconds remaining. Central's Adam Flinn collected the missed free throw, drove the length of the court, and was called for an offensive foul while driving to the basket for a lay-up as time expired.
Luther's offensive attack was led by the trio of Thompson, Anthony Westhusing and Aaron Blumberg. Thompson finished with 12 points, while Westhusing had 11 and Blumberg 10. Westhusing did the majority of his damage from behind the arch connecting on 3-of-5 attempts. Thompson also led the team with seven rebounds.
Flinn led Central with 19 points. Caden Mauck and Sean Kostyk both chipped in 13. Flinn and Mauck both collected a game high eight rebounds.
The win gives Luther an American Rivers Conference record of 1-3, 5-8 overall. Central is also 1-3 in league play, 4-9 overall.
Luther returns to action this Saturday, Jan. 11 when they will travel to nationally ranked No. 10 Nebraska Wesleyan University. Tip-off in Lincoln will take place at 4:00 p.m.
