Luther hosted St. Mary's University (MN) for its final home non-conference game of the year. At the end of regulation the score was tied 89-89. The Cardinals outscored the Norse 14-8 in the extra five minutes of play and secured the 103-97 victory.
Luther trailed St. Mary's 51-47 at halftime and fell behind by as many at 10 points (70-80) with 6:46 left in the game. The Norse put together a 19-7 run, capped off with a traditional three-point play by Gage Thompson, and a free throw by Ethan Ilunga, that gave the Norse an 89-87 advantage with 22 ticks left on the clock. The Cardinals Raheem Anthony sent the game into overtime on a jumper with nine seconds left on the clock.
In the overtime, St. Mary's Kareem Anthony-Bello knocked down a three-point basket with 3:40 left and the Cardinals never trailed the rest of the way.
For the second game in a row, five Norse tallied double digits. Thompson led this group with a career high 24 points. James Kappus (16), Ethan Ilunga (12), Garrian Wade (11) and Aaron Blumberg (10) completed this list.
The Cardinals were led by the duo of Eli Cave with 27 points and Anthony with 26. Sawyer Rosner (15), Greg Martin (13) and Kareem Anthony-Bello (11) completed the list of double digit scorers.
The loss levels Luther's overall record to 4-4, while St. Mary's improved to 3-1.
This coming Monday, Dec. 2, Luther will travel to Cedar Falls, Iowa to take on the University of Northern Iowa in an exhibition game that will begin at 6:00 p.m. in the McLeod Center.
On Wednesday, Dec. 4, the Norse will begin American Rivers Conference play hosting Loras College at 7:30 p.m.
