Luther opened its 2019-20 campaign with an 80-77 non-conference victory over Macalester College this afternoon in the Regents Center.
Trailing 41-38 at halftime, the Norse put together two runs in the second half that proved to be the difference in the game. The Norse outscored the Scots 16-2 in the first five minutes of the second frame and led by 11 (54-43). The Scots battled back and took their final lead of the game with 7:43 remaining of 63-62. Luther answered with a 7-0 run that gave them the cushion to secure the victory.
Macalester did the majority of its damage from behind the arch connecting on 12-of-29 attempts. Luther countered at the free throw line connecting on 16-of-22.
Four Norse tallied double digits. James Kappus and Garrian Wade both had 16 points. Aaron Blumberg and Ethan Ilunga added 14 and 12 respectively off the bench. Wade just missed a double-double pulling down a team best nine rebounds.
The Scots were led by Gabriel Ramos with 19 and Jackson Henningfield with 17.
Luther returns to action Tuesday night, Nov. 12, when it will host Maranatha Baptist University at 7:00 p.m.
