A penalty kick by Hailey Sanchez in the 50th minute was all that was needed this afternoon in Indianola, Iowa, as Luther defeated host Simpson 1-0. Sanchez's goal was her seventh of the year and third game winner.
Luther out shot Simpson 12-5 and placed four shots on goal. Norse keeper Kennedy Bergren faced just one shot on goal.
Luther will now face regular season champions and the No. 1 seed of the tournament Loras College on Wednesday, Nov. 6 at 5:00 p.m. The Duhawks won the regular season title with a record of 7-1, 13-4 overall.
The Norse will be making their seventh consecutive appearance in the semifinals. During the 24-year history of the conference tournament, Luther has advanced to the semifinals all but two years (2005, 2012).
Loras and Luther are familiar foes in the tournament, as they have faced each other 12 times. Loras holds an 8-3-1 lead in the tournament series and is 6-0 over Luther in the semifinal round.
Tonight's victory gives Luther an overall record of 8-8-2. Simpson completes its season with a mark of 10-4-5.
