In a battle between nationally ranked teams, No. 16 Luther defeated No. 14 Central 3-0 this afternoon in the semifinals of the American Rivers Conference Tournament in Pella. The Dutch were the No. 1 seed of the tournament after capturing their first regular season conference championship and Luther is the No. 5 seed.
The Norse dominated the match out shooting the Dutch 14-6 and placed 8 shots on goal. Norse keeper Carson Davenport and the defensive line held the Dutch to just three shots on goal.
Marc-Arthur Shapiro scored what proved to be the game winner just four minutes in to the match. Shapiro scored on a header off an assist by Ben Keller (13). Shapiro's goal was his fourth of the year and first game winner.
In the second half, Luther's final goal of the match was scored by Vila unassisted at 88:20. This was his 11th goal of the year.
The victory gives Luther an overall record of 15-4-1, while Central has a record of 14-3-2.
Luther has now advanced to championship match for the forth consecutive year and 12th time during the 24-year history of the conference tournament. The Norse have claimed the tournament title eight times, including two of the last three years (2016, 2018). Luther's record in the championship match is 8-2-1.
Luther will have to wait and see who they will face. No. 3 Simpson and No. 2 Loras play each other tonight at 7:30 p.m. The winner of this match will host the championship match on Saturday, Nov. 9.
