Returning to the NFCA Division III Top-25 today at No. 24, Luther swept Augustana (IL) this afternoon at Carver Field in Rock Island, Ill., by identical scores of 4-3. Luther has now won 10 in a row, its longest win streak of the year, and improved to 20-3.
In game one, Morgan Hogenson drove in what proved to be the game winner in the top of the fifth on a fielders choice. With one out and the bases loaded, Hogenson drove in Hannah Halverson, who started the inning with a single to left field. Halverson, Blake Banowetz and Addy Pender all had two hits.
Samantha Bratland (11-3) went the distance in the circle for the win. Bratland allowed three unearned runs, all coming in the bottom of the fifth following a Luther error, walked four and struck out seven.
In the nightcap, all four of Luther's runs were unearned. Blake Banowetz, who was 2-for-2 with three rbi, drove in the game winner with a single to center field in the top of the seventh. She also drove in two runs in the fifth with her 11th double of the year. Designated player Maleah Georgen drove in a run on an infield single to short stop in the fourth.
Courtney Cooper pitched five innings and allowed two runs on two hits, walked four and struck out four for a no decision. Bratland (12-3) picked up the win in relief allowing one run on three hits, walked one and struck out three.
Luther will be home for the first time this season this Saturday, April 6 when it will host Buena Vista University. This American Rivers Conference twin bill will begin at 1:00 p.m.
