The Luther College men's tennis team has won the American Rivers Conference Automatic Qualifier Tournament. The Norse defeated Central College in the semifinals 5-0 and then defeated Coe College 5-2 in the championship match. The AQ title was the sixth in school history and the first since 2011. With the championship, Luther earned the league's automatic berth to the 2019 NCAA III National Tournament.
In the semifinals versus Central, the Norse jumped out to a 3-0 lead after doubles. Nate Parsons and Cole Schneider won at No. 1 (8-4); Brian Murman and Ryan Ortega won at No. 2 (8-3); and Grant Morton and Brook Norwood won at No. 3 (8-3).
Schneider at No. 1 singles and Morton at No. 2 singles sealed the victory with straight set wins. Schneider defeated William Isiminger (6-0, 6-2) and Morton defeated David Boschma (6-0, 6-0).
In the championship match, Luther defeated Coe for the first time in the title match since 2011. The Norse trailed 2-1 following doubles and then rolled off four wins in singles to secure the title. No. 4 Murmon was dominant in a (6-2, 6-2) win. Jake Smith followed with a (6-0, 6-2) victory at No. 6. Norwood gave the Norse a 4-2 advantage with a (6-2, 6-2) win at No. 5. Morton clinched the title winning a three-set match (3-6, 6-2, 6-1).
The Norse will find out who their opponent will be in the first round of the NCAA III National Tournament on Monday, May 6 at 11:00 a.m.
