Luther completed the regular season schedule sweeping Simpson College this afternoon at McBride Field. The Norse won game one 4-3 and went on to post a 5-3 victory in 10 innings in game two.
In game one, Colin Cofey (6-3) allowed three runs on 10 hits, walked two and struck out four en route to the victory on the mound. Kyle Bode pitched the final two innings and allowed just one hit while securing his first save of the year.
The Norse scored a run in both the fifth and eighth frames and two in the sixth. Joe McKibben hit a two-run blast over the right field fence in the sixth, his first of the year. Bryce Hingst and Jake Halverson were both 2-for-5.
Halverson and Trent Athmann each drove in a run in the top of the 10th to secure the nightcap victory. Athmann finished the game going 3-for-4 with two rbi. Jake Vogt also had three hits, while Owen Vander Linden tallied two.
Bode picked up the win in relief. Bode pitched the final 1 2/3 innings and allowed one hit and walked one. John Colucci III got the start and pitched six full innings and allowed three runs on six hits, walked three and struck out two.
The sweep gives Luther an American Rivers Conference record of 15-9, 22-18 overall. Simpson finished the year with a record of 5-19 in league play, 13-23 overall.
Next week, Luther will be the No. 3 seed for the double elimination A-R-C Baeball Tournament that will be played at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Cedar Rapids, Iowa May 9-11. The Norse begin play on Thursday, May 9 and will face No. 6 Loras College at 11:00 a.m. The winner of this game will face No. 3 Buena Vista University at 2:00 p.m. The loser will play at 8:00 p.m.
