Luther split with No. 15 Coe College this afternoon in Cedar Rapids. The Kohawks won game one by a final of 6-5 and the Norse posted an 8-3 victory in game two.
In game one, Luke Plunkett hit a two-run home run over the left-center field fence in the top of the seventh that tied the game at 5-5. In the bottom of the ninth with two outs and a runner on third, the Kohawks won the game on a wild pitch.
Plunkett also drove in a run in the fifth with a sac fly to left field and led the offensive attack with three rbi. Joe McKibben was the only Norse to produce a multiple hit effort going 3-for-4.
In game two, Luther scored four runs in the sixth, three in the eighth and added an insurance run in the ninth en route to the victory.
Jon Colucci III (3-0) was credited with the win. Colucci threw 6 2/3 innings, allowed two runs on six hits, walked one and struck out four.
Luther remains alone in second place in the American Rivers Conference standings posting a record of 12-6, 19-15 overall. Coe claimed the league title this afternoon and is 19-2 in the A-R-C, 29-3 overall.
This weekend, Luther will host Buena Vista University (10-8, 17-16) for the final three-game home stand of the year. Friday's (1x9) game will begin at 3:00 p.m. Saturday's double header (2x9) will begin at Noon.
