The league leading Coe College Kohawks visited Luther this afternoon for a tilt between the American Rivers Conference’s top two teams. The No. 18 Kohawks continued to roll and defeated the Norse 15-2 in seven innings.
The Kohawks entered the game leading the A-R-C in hitting. Coe tallied 20 hits, its second highest single game total of the year, and scored six runs in the second inning, seven in the fourth and one in both the fifth and sixth frames. Only eight of the Kohawks runs were earned as the Norse committed three errors.
Coming off of two-days rest, Luther ace Joey Cardamon (4-3) started the game and threw the first two frames. Cardamon garnered the loss after allowing six hits, six unearned runs, a walk, and two strikeouts. Relievers Ross Hingst, Nate Loch, Tyler Boesel, and Ryan Manternach also saw time on the hill.
Coe’s starter, Zach Kammin (7-1), threw a gem over six innings. Kammin got the win allowing two runs on five hits. He walked one walk and struck out five.
Luther did all of its offensive damage in the first inning. Senior Jake Halverson singled and was driven in on an rbi single by catcher Luke Plunkett. Bryce Hingst then drove in Plunkett on the first of his two hits, a single down the left field line. With his rbi, Hingst moved into a tie for fourth on Luther's all-time list with Brad Paulsrud (2002-05) with 107 career rbi.
The Kohawk victory was their 13th in a row and improved their season records to 25-2 overall and 15-1 in A-R-C play. Luther now sits at 17-12 overall, 10-3 in conference.
These two teams will wrap up this three-game series a week from today on April 23 for a double-header (2x9) in Cedar Rapids.
The next series for the Norse will be this weekend when they will travel west to face Nebraska Wesleyan University. The first game of this three-game series will take place on Friday, April 19 starting at 3:00 p.m. On Saturday, the double header (2x9) will begin at Noon.
