Luther completed the three-game season sweep over the Wartburg College Knights with an 8-3 victory in Waverly tonight. With the win, the Norse have now won five of their last six contests and Wartburg has lost their last eight.
The Norse and Knights went back-and-forth until the late stages of the game when Luther opened things up with a three-run ninth inning.
On the mound, Luther’s pitching staff combined for an impressive effort. Sophomore Nate Loch started and threw 1 2/3 innings. Calvin Brinda, Tyler Boesel, and John Colucci III all saw action in relief. Brinda (1-0) picked up the win, his first of the year. Colucci, who was named the A-R-C Athlete of the Week for his no-hit bid against the Knights a week ago, recorded his first save of the season.
The Norse outscored Wartburg 8-3 and out hit the Knights by a mark of 10-5. Senior utilityman Trent Athmann continued his excellent season going 3-for-4 with a run scored, two stolen bases and an rbi. Infielder Kelby Johnson went 2-for-3 with two doubles, two rbi, and two steals. Luke Plunkett drove in two runs and Jake Vogt crossed home twice.
The win improved Luther’s record 14-11 overall and 7-2 in American Rivers play. Wartburg’s mark moved to 6-19 overall and 3-9 in league action.
The Norse will welcome the Central College Dutch to Decorah this weekend for a three-game conference set on Friday (1x9) and Saturday (2x9).
