Luther and Loras wrapped up their three-game series here in the valley this afternoon. After an hour rain delay, the Norse won the first of today's double header 3-0 and were defeated in the nightcap by a final of 8-5.
In game one, Colin Coffey threw a complete game shutout. He spread seven hits and never faced more then four batters in an inning during the game. He struck out five in nine innings of work and is now 3-2 for the year.
The Norse pounded out 10 hits led by Bryce Hingst who was 3-for-4. Kelby Johnson and Luke Plunkett were both 2-for-4 and drove in one run each. Owen Vander Linden drove in the first run of the ball game on a sac fly to right field.
In the nightcap, Loras jumped out to a 7-0 lead after 4 1/2 innings before Luther managed to put three runs on the board in the bottom of the fifth. The Norse added two in the seventh to pull to within two (7-5), but allowed Loras to score a run in the ninth.
Plunkett drove in three runs, the first with a sac fly to center field in the fifth, and he also drove in both runs in the seventh on a single to right field. Johnson was 2-for-3 in the lead-off slot and drove in a run in the fifth. Jake Vogt tallied two hits (2-for-4) and scored twice. Jake Halverson drove in a run in the fifth with a double to right field.
Kyle Bode (2-3) was credited with the loss. Bode threw four innings, allowed seven runs and struck out four.
The splits gives Luther an American Rivers Conference record of 6-2, 13-11 overall. Loras is now 4-7 in league play, 10-11 overall.
Luther will return to action on Tuesday, April 9 when it will travel to Wartburg College for one nine-inning game that will begin at 6:00 p.m.
