The Norse started this weekend’s three-game series against the Loras College Duhawks in winning fashion as ace Joey Cardamon and a balanced offensive attack paved the way for a 5-1 victory for Luther.
The Norse jumped out to an early lead with the score settling at 4-0 after two complete innings. Loras narrowed the margin in the fifth by scoring a run of their own which made the total 4-1 in favor of Luther. The Norse scored their fifth and final insurance run in the eighth frame.
Luther tallied five hits on the afternoon with one each coming from Kelby Johnson, Luke Plunkett, Bryce Hingst, Derek McCready, and Jake Halverson. McCready and Joe McKibben each drove in one run, while Owen Vander Linden had 2 rbi. The run-scoring was just as balanced as five different Norse crossed home plate.
Cardamon (3-2) gave up five hits, one unearned run, one walk, and recorded three strikeouts en route to the complete game win. Cardamon improved his ERA to 1.88.
Duhawk starter Sam Marhefke (2-3) bounced back from a slow start to throw six full innings and gave up three hits, four runs, four walks, and struck out three. Jake Oglesby drove in Dylan Pardoe to plate the Duhawks lone run.
With the win, Luther’s record is now 5-1 in league play and 12-10 overall. Loras fell to 3-6 in American Rivers Conference action and 9-10 overall.
The Norse and Duhawks will wrap up their series tomorrow afternoon with a doubleheader starting at noon.
