Two of the top pitchers in the American Rivers Conference battled this afternoon in the first of three games at the University of Dubuque. Chase Kueter, a two-time first team all-conference performer for the Spartans, and Joey Cardamon, the 2018 Conference Pitcher of the Year, battled until Kueter was knocked out of the game in the top of the ninth inning.
Holding a slim 2-1 lead entering the ninth, Luther put four runs on the board thanks to four hits, en route to a 6-1 victory. The Norse scored one in both the third and fifth frames before the Spartans scored their lone run in the sixth.
Luther tallied nine hits, three of which came off the bat of Trent Athmann and two off the bat of Kelby Johnson. Athmann was 3-for-5 with 2 rbi and Johnson was 2-for-3 with two rbi. Jake Vogt and Luke Plunkett also drove in a run each.
Cardamon (2-2) notched his second win of the year. He went 8 2/3 innings, allowed one earned run on three hits, walked three and struck out 10.
Kueter allowed five earned runs on seven hits, walked three and struck out nine.
This was the conference opener for Luther who is now 8-9 overall. Dubuque, the defending conference champion, fell to 1-3 in the A-R-C, 8-5-1 overall.
Theses two teams will wrap up the three games series tomorrow. First pitch of the twin bill will take place at 1:00 p.m.
