St. John's University manufactured a run in the bottom of the eighth and defeated Luther 2-1 this afternoon in Collegeville, Minn., and won the three-game series 2-1.
The Johnnies held a 1-0 lead until the top of the fourth when the Norse tied the score. Joe McKibben started the inning with a double down the left field line. Derek McCready followed with an rbi single up the middle. This was the only inning the Norse were able to produce more then one hit in an inning off the Johnnies Jake Dickmeyer who threw the complete game victory.
With two outs in the bottom of the eighth and a runner on second, the Johnnies Max Jackson hit a hard ground ball that was deep in the gap on the left side. Norse short stop Jake Halverson dove for the ball, but the ball glanced off his glove and went into left field for a hit, that scored the runner from second.
Kyle Bode (1-2) had a solid outing on the mound but was credited with the loss. Bode allowed two earned runs on eight hits, walked two and struck out three.
The loss gives the Norse an overall record of 6-9. No. 20 St. John's improved to 15-4.
Luther returns to action on Wednesday, March 26 when it will travel to UW-La Crosse. This one nine-inning game will begin at 3:00 p.m. at Copeland Park.
