Luther opened the 2019 campaign with a double header sweep of Hamline University today at the JC Ball Park, Pittsburg, Kansas. The Norse won game one 3-2 and game two by a final of 11-0. Both games were scheduledseven inning contests.
Game One Recap:
Trent Athmann led off the top of the eighth with a home run to left field that secured the 3-2 victory.
Luther scored one in the first and took a 2-1 lead with a run in the top of the fourth. Hamline tied the game scoring a run in both the fourth and sixth frames.
Luther tallied eight hits led by Athmann and Jake Halverson who were both 2-for-4.
Ross Hingst picked up the win on the mound in relief. Hingst threw 1 1/3 innings and got out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the eighth. He faced eight batters, walked two and struck out two.
Joey Cardamon got the start and pitched six innings, allowing two runs on five hits. He walked one and struck out seven.
Game Two Recap:
The Norse scored 11 runs on 12 hits and blew this game wide open with a six-run third inning. The Norse added two in the fourth and three in the seventh.
Tommy Gleason, who was 2-for-4, drove in two runs in the third with a double to center field. Bryce Hingst and Luke Plunkett were both 3-for-4, while Kelby Johnson was 2-for-3. Plunkett, Jake Vogt, Halverson and Joe McKibben all drove in a run.
Colin Cofey was credited with the win. Cofey allowed four hits in six innings of work, did not issue a walk and struck out four.
These two teams will travel to Adam LaRoche Stadium, Fort Scott, Kansas to a twin bill tomorrow. First pitch is slated for 10:00 a.m.
