Luther, the No. 4 seed of the American Rivers Conference Tournament, was defeated by No. 5 the University of Dubuque 7-5 in today's first game of the tournament that is hosted by Central College in Pella, Iowa.
The Spartans got off to a quick start in the top of the first thanks to a grand slam home run by Rachel Trader. Blake Banowetz pulled the Norse to within a run after hitting a three-run home run with two outs in the third. Hannah Halverson gave the Norse a short lived one-run lead, hitting a two-run home run over the left field fence in the bottom of the sixth. The Spartans answered with three runs in the top of the seventh to secure the come-from-behind victory.
The Spartans Abby McBee was credited with the win in the circle, the third time she had posted a win over the Norse in a little over two weeks. McBee allowed five runs on eight hits, did not issue a walk and struck out seven.
Samantha Bratland went the distance in the circle for the Norse. Bratland allowed seven runs on 10 hits, walked seven and struck out six.
Halverson and Paige Timmerman tallied five of Luther's eight hits. Halverson was 2-for-3 and Timmerman was 3-for-4.
The loss gives Luther an overall record of 30-10. Dubuque improved to 21-18.
