No. 13 Luther was swept this afternoon by the University of Dubuque with both games going extra innings.

In game one the Norse were defeated 1-0 in eight innings. Spartan pitcher Abby McBee threw a one-hit shutout. Hannah Halverson who produced the lone Norse hit in the sixth frame, was the only player to advance to second base against McBee, after Morgan Hogenson laid down a 3-4 sac bunt.

The Spartans scored the winning run in the top of the eighth with two outs and runners on first and second. Kaylin Featheringill reached on an error that scored pinch runner Hailey Wang.

Samantha Bratland (17-4) picked up the loss in the circle. Bratland spread five hits, walked one and struck out two.

In the nightcap, a two-run triple by Featheringill in the top of the ninth, proved to be the game winning hit as the Spartans posted a 5-3 victory.

Luther took a 1-0 lead after one when Annie See drove in Blake Banowetz with a single. The Norse tied the game at 1-1 in the fourth thanks to a home run by Addy Pender that sailed over the left field fence, her third of the year. After Dubuque took a 3-2 lead in the top of the eighth, Luther answered with a run of its own to send the game into the ninth and final frame. Paige Timmerman led off the eighth with a double to the right-center field gap. Two batters later, Abby Gehringer drove in Timmerman with a shot in the same gap for a single.

Timmerman, Annie See and Hannah Halverson were all 2-for-4 and combined for six the Norse 10 hits. 

Courtney Cooper (8-3) picked up the loss in relief. Cooper took over for Kendra Cooper who allowed two runs on four hits, walked one and struck out two during the first four innnings and left the game with the scored tied 1-1. Courtney allowed three runs on five hits and struck out two in her five innings of work.

Box Score

The Norse fell to 10-4 in American Rivers Conference play, 28-7 overall. Dubuque improved to 6-8 in league play, 23-12 overall.

Luther has two games remaining in conference play and will travel to Central College (10-4) this Saturday, April 27 for what will be a battle for the regular season conference championship. Start time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

If Luther and Central split Saturday, there will be a three-way tie for first place with Coe (11-5) who lost to Simpson in game two of their double header 3-1 this afternoon. A sweep by either team will secure the outright title and the No. 1 seed for the A-R-C Tournament that will be held May 3-4.
