No. 16 Luther and Nebraska Wesleyan University split today's American Rivers Conference double header in Lincoln, Neb. The Norse won game one 7-4 and were defeated 8-5 in game two.
Samantha Bratland (17-3) tied the school record for career wins after securing the victory in game one. Bratland went the distance in the circle and allowed four runs on five hits, walked three and struck out seven. She is now 87-15 in the circle. Becca Girvan (2011-14) set the career record posting a mark of 87-21.
The Norse tallied 10 hits and scored three runs in the second and four more in the fourth. Abby Gehringer and Annie See both drove in two runs. Gehringer hit a two-run home run in the second and See drove in two runs with a single in the fourth.
Nebraska Wesleyan tallied 10 hits in game two scored four runs in both the third and fourth frames to secure the victory. Luther also had 10 hits and scored a run in both the third and fourth innings and made things interesting in the the seventh crossing the plate three times.
Blake Banowetz drove in three runs and was 2-for-4 at the plate. Paige Timmerman also had a multiple hit game with a 3-for-4 effort.
Courtney Cooper (8-2) was credited with the loss. Cooper allowed four runs on eight hits in three innings of work. Kendra Cooper pitched the final three frames and did not allow a run but gave up five hits.
Luther remains in first place in the A-R-C standings. The Norse are now 10-2 in league play, 28-5 overall. Nebraska Wesleyan improved to 7-5 in the A-R-C, 22-10 overall.
Luther wraps up its non-conference schedule on Monday, April 22. The Norse will travel to UW-River Falls for a twin bill that will begin at 2:00 p.m.
