No. 17 Luther traveled to No. 8 Coe for an American Rivers Conference showdown in Cedar Rapids this afternoon. The Norse swept the Kohawks posting an 8-4 come-from-behind victory in game one and won the nightcap by an 11-1 margin in five innings.
Game one saw the Kohawks score all four of their runs in the bottom of the first. Luther drew first blood in the third thanks to a solo home run by Sierra Freeland, her second of the year. The Norse added two more in the fourth when Blake Banowetz and Addy Pender both went yard over the left field fence. The Norse broke the game open scoring five runs on six hits in the sixth frame.
The Norse tallied 11 hits and were led by Paige Timmermann, Elsa Skeie, Pender and Freeland who all had two hits each. Timmerman and Pender drove in two runs, while Freeland, Skeie, Banowetz and Morgan Hogenson each drove in one.
Samantha Bratland (16-3) picked up the win in the circle. After giving up five hits in the first frame, she settled down and spread five more hits and only had one Coe base runner reach third the rest of the way. She walked two and struck out three. Bratland is now one win away from tying the career win record held by Becca Girvan (2011-14) who posted a mark of 87-21. Bratland is now 86-15.
The Norse continued to swing hot bats in the nightcap, exploding for 11 more hits that led to crooked numbers on the scoreboard in three of the five innings. The Norse scored three in the first and four in both the second and fourth frames.
Pender led the Norse attack going 2-for-3 with five rbi. Pender tallied four rbi in one swing, hitting a grand slam over the center field fence in the second. Banowetz and Hannah Halverson also had two hits. Halverson drove in two runs, while Freeland and Maleah Georgen were both credited with one rbi.
Kendra Cooper (3-0) got the call for game two in the circle. Cooper allowed one run on four hits, walked one and struck out two en route to her second complete game of the year.
Luther sits atop the A-R-C standings with a record of 9-1 after today's sweep. The Norse also improved to 27-4 overall. Coe fell to 8-4 in league play, 28-7 overall.
Luther travels to Nebraska Wesleyan University this Saturday, April 20. This double header will begin in Lincoln, Nebraska at 1:00 p.m.
