No. 24 Luther remained unbeaten in American Rivers Conference play, sweeping Buena Vista University this afternoon 6-0 and 5-1. The Norse have now defeated the Beavers 29 consecutive games dating back to April 15, 2006.
Game one saw Luther score four runs in the second with out a hit. The Beavers pitching staff walked five, hit one, and committed an error, before they were able to end the frame. Buena Vista reliever Ashton Miller held the Norse bats in check and did not allow a hit until the bottom of the sixth, when Luther scored two runs on three hits.
Samantha Bratland (13-3) went the distance in the circle. Bratland spread five hits, did not issue a walk and struck out eight.
Luther jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead after three batters in the first inning of the nightcap. After a lead-off single by Anne See, a walk by Paige Timmerman, Blake Banowetz hit her first home run of the year over the left field fence. Banowetz also drove in a run in the second and finished the game going 2-for-3 with four rbi.
Courtney Cooper (8-0) picked up the win in the circle. Cooper pitched the first four frames and allowed one run on six hits, walked one and struck out one. Younger sister Kendra Cooper, took over for the final three frames and faced 10 batters, struck out four and allowed one hit.
The sweep gives Luther an A-R-C record of 4-0. The Norse have now won a season best 12 in a row and are 22-3 overall. Buena Vista fell to 0-6 in league play, 14-12 overall.
Luther will continue league play at home on Wednesday, April 10, when it will host Simpson College at 2:00 p.m.
