Luther improved to 6-2 after sweeping St. Mary's University (MN) this afternoon at the Rochester Regional Dome, Rochester, Minn. The Norse won game one 5-0 and the nightcap by a final of 3-2.
In game one, Samantha Bratland tossed her 21st career shutout, allowing two hits in seven innings of work. She retired the first 10 batters she faced before giving up a single in the fourth. After giving up a second single to the first batter in the fifth, she proceeded to retire the final nine batters of the game.
Offensively, Luther jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead scoring three in the first and one in the second. The Norse to their total with a run in the seventh.
Paige Timmerman, Abby Gehringer and Elsa Skeie each drove in a run in the first and Sierra Freeland drove in the final run in the seventh. Luther's run in the second was the result of a St. Mary's infield error.
Blake Banowetz and Freeland were both 2-for-4 and produced half of the Norse hits.
Freshman pitcher Kendra Cooper picked up her first collegiate win allowing two runs on three hits. Cooper also swung a hot bat going 3-for-3, all singles while batting in the eighth slot.
The Norse jumped out to a 2-0 lead thanks to a double by Gehringer and a sac fly by Skeie.
Cooper held the Cardinals in check until the top of the fifth, when they scored two runs on a two-out double to right field and tied the game 2-2.
In the bottom of the sixth, Addy Pender and Cooper hit back-to-back singles. A sac bunt by Hannah Halverson advanced pinch runner Emily Fell and Cooper to third and second respectively. Annie See drove in what proved to be the game winner with a deep sac fly to center field.
Luther's next games will be at the PFX Spring Games in Clermont, Florida. The Norse are currently scheduled to play 10 games starting March 23 and finishing their spring trip March 28.
