Luther dropped a hard fought 87-79 decision to Wartburg College tonight in the Regents Center. Trailing 46-27 at halftime, the Norse cut the Knights 19-point lead to four (71-67) with 4:30 remaining in the game. Back-to-back three-point buckets by the Knights squelched the Norse run and jumped back to a 10-point advantage at the 2:15 mark.
Wartburg shot 52.2% from behind the arch connecting on 12-of-23 attempts. Wartburg also shot 67.9% from the charity stripe making 19-of-28.
Luther had four players tally double digits. Spencer Sturges led this foursome with a career high 20 points. James Kappus had 17 and was followed by Garrian Wade with 11 and Aaron Blumberg with 10. Gage Thompson, who finished the night with nine points, grabbed a game and career high 12 rebounds.
American Rivers Conference leading scorer Jaran Sabus had a game high 21 and was one of five Knights to produce double figures. Aidan Weber recorded a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
The loss was the fourth in a row for the Norse who are now 1-12 in league play, 7-14 overall. Wartburg improved 9-4 in conference play, 15-7 overall.
Luther wraps up a busy week with a trip to Central College this Saturday, Feb. 9. Start time in Pella is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
