Luther blistered the nets from downtown tonight and defeated the University of Dubuque 97-87 in the Stoltz Sports Center. The Norse were 20-of-34 from behind the arch good for 58.8%. The 20 three-pointers was a school record, breaking the old mark of 16 that was set Nov. 29, 2017 against Central, and then match earlier this year against Cornell on Dec. 15, 2018.
Six Norse tallied double digits led by Spencer Sturges with 18 points. His 18 points, along with his game high seven assists, matched his career highs for both categories. Jadyn Torres, James Kappus and Garrian Wade were all credited with 16 points. Aaron Blumberg and Ray Whitlock both chipped in 11. Torres point total was a career high and Kappus led the attack from three-point land connecting on 5-of-8 attempts.
The win was the first conference win of the year for the Norse who are now 1-8, 7-10 overall. The victory also snapped a streak of 27 consecutive losses in conference play, dating back to Feb. 8, 2017, when the Norse defeated Wartburg College in Waverly 69-64. Dubuque lost its third game in a row and is now 4-6 in league play, 11-8 overall.
Luther returns to action this Saturday, Jan. 26 when it will host Buena Vista University. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
