Buena Vista University held a six-point lead at halftime and never trailed in the second frame and defeated Luther tonight in Siebens Fieldhouse by a final of 89-81.
Points off turnovers and bench scoring proved to be two factors that proved to be key in the outcome of the game. Both teams scored 31 field goals, but the Beavers scored 23 points off of Norse turnovers, and outscored the Norse bench 34-22.
Jared Nicolaisen led a trio of Norse double digit scorers. Nicolaisen tallied 21 points and crept closer to his 1,000th career point. Following tonight's game he needs 28 points to reach this milestone. James Kappus, who missed just three shots this afternoon had 19, while Gage Thompson added 10.
Buena Vista was led by Timothy Jeffries and DJ McNeal. Jefferies led all scorers with a career high 29 points. Jefferies was 10-of-14 from the field and 6-of-9 from the charity stripe. He also recorded a double-double collecting a game high 10 rebounds. McNeal tallied 22 off the bench.
The loss drops Luther's American Rivers Conference record to 0-4, 6-6 overall. Buena Vista improved to 2-3 in league play, 8-6 overall.
Luther will travel to Waverly, Iowa to face Wartburg College on Wednesday, Jan. 9. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
