Luther had its four-game win streak snapped tonight in Cedar Rapids, as it was defeated by Coe College 81-75. Trailing by 13 points with 7:57 left in the first half, the Norse battled back and pulled to within one (35-34) at halftime. The largest spread in the second stanza by the Kohawks was nine points with 1:25 remaining in the game.
The free throw line proved to be the difference. Both teams were credited with 25 field goals, but Coe was 27-of-35 from the charity stripe, while Luther was 19-of-25.
Jared Nicolaisen once again led the Norse attack. Nicolaisen tallied 21 points and also led the team with eight rebounds. Anthony Westhusing came off the bench and produce a career high 14. James Kappus also tallied double digits with 12 all coming in the second half.
Nolan Timp led a foursome of Coe players that finished with double digits. Timp had 21 points and was followed by Calvin Winker and Tommy Hook with 13 and Josh Schmitt with 11.
The loss gives Luther an American Rives Conference record of 0-3, 6-5 overall. Coe improved to 2-2 in league play, 8-5 overall.
Luther will travel to Buena Vista University this Saturday, Jan. 5. Tip-off will take place at 4:00 p.m.
