Luther picked up its first win of the season, an 82-80 victory over Bethany Lutheran College this afternoon in the Regents Center. The win over the Vikings was the sixth in the series against no losses.
The victory had a bit of drama as the Norse led the Vikings 37-22 at halftime, thanks to a defensive effort that held the Vikings to 25.7 percent. In the first 10 minutes of the second half, Bethany Lutheran put together a 30-13 run and took a 52-50 lead. The Norse responded with a 17-7 run of their own, but had to fight off an 11-4 run by the Vikings in the final 48 seconds of play to secure the victory.
Gage Thompson led a trio of double digits scores for the Norse pouring in a career high 22 points. Thompson was 5-of-6 from the field that included a 4-for-5 effort from behind the three-point line. He was also an impressive 8-of-10 from the charity stripe. Thompson also led the squad with eight rebounds. As a team, Luther connected on 25-of-30 opportunities from the free throw line.
Jared Nicolaisen made his season debut returning from an injury, to add 15 points in 18 minutes of action. Jadyn Torres also recorded a career high with 12 points.
Bethany Lutheran was led by Cire Mayfield with 17, Trenton Krueger with 14 and Trevin Nelson with 11. Krueger had a double-double collecting a game high 13 rebounds.
The win gives Luther an overall record of 1-1. Bethany Lutheran fell to 2-3.
The Norse return to action on Saturday, Nov. 24 when they will travel to Winona, Minn., to face the Cardinals of St. Mary's University. Tip-off is slated for 3:00 p.m.
