Luther moved into a tie for first place in the American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) standings after handing No. 18 Wartburg College a 75-63 defeat tonight in Waverly. The win snapped the Knights 30-game win streak in conference play as well as their 16-game conference home win streak. The last time Wartburg had lost in conference action was in Decorah on Jan. 18, 2017, when the Norse defeated the Knights 66-61.
Luther outscored Wartburg 21-10 in the first quarter and also led at halftime 31-23. Trailing the Norse by 12 early in the third quarter, the Knights put together a 22-9 run and led 48-47, at the end of the frame. In the fourth quarter, Luther outscored Wartburg 28-15, to secure the victory.
Four Norse tallied double digits led by Anna Edel who led all scorers with a career high 20 points. Edel was 7-of-12 from the field that included a 3-of-5 effort from behind the arch. Sarah Holtz was credited with 16, while Madison Spence and Laura Hamilton chipped in 13 and 12 respectively.
Wartburg was led by Adrienne Boettger with 14 and Emma Gerdes with 10.
The win was the third in a row for the Norse who are now 4-1 in the A-R-C, 5-7 overall. Wartburg falls to 4-1 in league play, 11-3 overall.
Luther returns to action this Saturday, Jan. 12 when it will host Central College. Tip-off is slated for 2:00 p.m. in the Regents Center.
