Luther posted its first win of the season this afternoon defeating No. 24 Gustavus Adolphus College 71-64. The Norse never trailed and jumped out to a 20-12 lead after the first quarter. With 4:39 remaining in the third frame, Gustavus trailed Luther 51-34. The Gusties put together a 27-11 run to pull to within one 62-61, but it was a close as they would get the rest of the game. Anna Edel stopped the run with a three-point bucket and Madison Spence added a bucket in the paint with a little over two minutes remaining.
Defensively, Luther forced Gustavus to turn the ball over 20 times and held the Gusties to a 32.8 % field goal percentage. The Norse also won the battle of the boards 34-30.
The Norse were led by the trio of Laura Hamilton, Sarah Holtz and Brittney Sjulstad that all tallied double figures. Hamilton led all scorers with 17 points. Holtz added 13 and Sjutstad produced 10 off the bench in 17 minutes of play. Spence was next with eight points. Holtz led the team with seven rebounds followed by Spence with six.
The win gives Luther an overall record of 1-2. Gustavus fell to 3-2.
The Norse return to action on Wednesday, Nov. 28 when they will travel to UW-Platteville. Game time is slated for 7:00 p.m.
