The University of Dubuque defeated Luther 42-19 this afternoon at Chalmers Field in Dubuque. A combined 48 points were scored in the first two quarters, with the Spartans holding a 38-13 lead at halftime.
Holding a 7-6 lead midway through the first quarter, the Spartans scored 28 unanswered points and held a 35-6 advantage with a little over two minutes left in the second quarter.
The Norse pulled to within 35-13, when Justin Montgomery pulled down the first of his two touchdown passes from Ian Kuykendall, with 33 ticks left in the second frame.
Dubuque scored its final touchdown of the afternoon at 7:59 of the third quarter. Luther completed the afternoon's scoring when on a four-yard pass from Kuykendall to Montgomery.
The Spartans produced 452 yards of total offense. Maurece Herrion rushed for 129 yards and four touchdowns, while quarterback Sean Duffy threw for 247 yards and two touchdowns.
Kuykendall led the Norse rushing attack with 71 yards on 16 carries and threw for 117 yards. Tre Jensen was next with 43 yards on 10 carries and Andrew Whalen had 28 yards on seven rushes. Montgomery led all receivers with eight catches and 73 yards.
The loss gives Luther an overall record of 0-5, 0-3 in the American Rivers Conference. Dubuque improved to 4-2, 3-1.
Next week, Luther will host Buena Vista University at 1:00 p.m.
