It was Community Day this afternoon in Carlson Stadium and the estimated crowd of 1600 were entertained by a very good American Rivers Conference football game. Unfortunately for Luther fans, Loras posted a 35-28 come-from-behind victory.
Luther held a 21-18 halftime lead but fell behind 25-21 with 6:50 remaining in the third quarter. Luther retook the lead when junior quarterback Ian Kuykendall brook loose for a 60-yard touchdown run at 5:14 of this same frame.
Kuykendall had a career afternoon producing 369 yards of total offense. He led all rushers with 137 yards on 23 carries and threw for 232 yards and two touchdowns. He connected on touchdown passes of 29 yards to Andre Atkins and 17 yards to Justin Montgomery.
Loras tied the score at 28-28 on a 22-yard field goal by Timmy Tischer with 7:19 left in the game. Just prior to this field goal, the Duhawks had stopped a 10-play Norse drive that finished with a missed 22-yard field goal on fourth and goal from the Duhawks six-yard line.
The dagger came with a little over four minutes remaining, when the Duhawks Noah Sigwarth connected on a 60-yard touchdown pass to Elijah Thomas.
Both teams had 400-plus yards of total offense. The Duhawks tallied 420 and Luther had 482.
Defensively, the Norse were led by Eythan Blair who was credited with a game high 17 tackles. Patrick Beatty was next with 13. The Norse also sacked Sigwarth five times. Michael Noll led this charge with two, while Tyler Sefried had 1.5 and Jarrett Villastrigo was credited with one.
Ricardo Chavez also had a solid afternoon. Chavez finished with 111 all-purpose yards that included 48 rushing and he also caught one pass for a career long 63 yards.
Austin Powell returned five kick-offs for 77 yards and had one catch for 23 yards and finished with 110 all-purpose yards.
The loss drops Luther's A-R-C record to 0-2, 0-4 overall. Loras improved to 2-1 overall and is now 1-0 in the A-R-C.
Next week the Norse have a bye week. They will return to conference play on Oct. 6 at the University of Dubuque. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
