Luther wrapped up its non-conference schedule against St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn., this afternoon. The Oles snapped a five-game losing streak to the Norse, posting a 34-29 victory in front of an estimated crowd of 2,321.
Trailing 28-3 with 5:48 left in the first half, Luther battled back to within the final outcome, with 11:56 left in the fourth quarter. The Norse had two excellent opportunities to take the lead, but came up short both times inside the Oles 20-yard line.
Following a two-yard plunge by Yassine Ouazzani that capped off a nine-play, 47-yard drive with 11:56 remaining in the fourth frame, Trevor Joiner recovered a St. Olaf fumbled punt attempt on the Oles 20-yard line. Four plays later, the Oles got the ball back on downs, on their own 11-yard line.
With 3:03 left in the game, Luther was given one more opportunity to take the lead. Starting on their own 44, Luther ran 10 plays and moved the football to the Oles 17, but was unable to punch the pigskin into the end zone.
Luther tallied 329 yards of total offense, 215 on the ground and 114 in the air. Junior quarterback Ian Kuykendall led the rushing attack with 99 yards and two touchdowns. He also threw a 9-yard touchdown strike to Justin Montgomery late in the second quarter.
Defensively, the Norse gave up 414 yards of total offense, the majority coming in the passing game. St. Olaf quarterback Ricardo Johnson III, threw for 222 yards and three touchdowns.
Dante Joseph led all tacklers with 10, that included six solo. Patrick Beatty was next with six, while Jeremy Whalen, Michael Noll and Bryce Neuse were all credited with five. Noll recorded the lone sack of the afternoon and Neuse was credited with a fumble recovery and an interception. Scott Edwards also picked of one pass and returned it 29 yards.
The loss gives Luther an overall record of 0-2. St. Olaf improved to 2-0.
Luther begins American Rivers Conference action next week on the road. The Norse will travel to Pella, Iowa to face the Central College Dutch. Kick-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
