Luther was defeated by UW-Superior 82-73 tonight at Mortorelli Gymnasium. This was the first of two games the Norse will play against Upper Midwest Conference opponents during the UW-Superior Classic.
UW-Superior put together a 20-11 run in the final seven minutes of the first half and held a 38-33 advantage at intermission. The Yellowjackets increased their lead to as many as 14 (65-51) at the midway point of the second frame. The Norse battled back and pulled to within two (67-65) with 4:55 remaining, but were outscored 15-8 down the stretch.
Jared Nicolaisen and McCoy Matthias led the offensive attack producing career highs. Nicolaisen led all scorers with 27 points, while Matthias tallied 18. Nicolaisen was 11-of-15 from the field and 3-for-4 from the charity stripe. Matthias missed just two shot attempts (9-of-11) and was a perfect 2-for-2 from the free throw line.
The Norse shot nearly 50 percent, but were out shot by a Yellowjackets attack that connected on 57.1 percent, that included a 64.3 percent (9-14) effort from behind the three-point line.
After tonight's game, both teams are 2-2 overall.
Luther will face St. Scholastica tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
