Luther fell one point shy tonight in the Regents Center losing to Buena Vista University 71-70. Trailing by as many as 20 points early in the second half, the Norse battled back and pulled to within the final outcome, thanks to a layup by Christian Wright with 31 ticks left on the clock. The Norse had two opportunities in the final seconds to take the lead but the three-point attempts both fell just short. Defensively, the Norse held the Beavers well below their season average of 84.8 points per game.
James Kappus (16), Anthony Westhusing (11) and Wright (10) led the Norse attack. Kappus also collected a team best six rebounds followed by Wright with five and both McCoy Matthias and Ray Whitlock with four. Jared Nicolaisen dished out a game high seven assists.
Davie Jeffries led Buena Vista producing a double-double. Jeffries tallied 21 points and 11 rebounds. Billy Sparks came off the bench and scored 13, while Canyon Hopkins completed the list of double-digit scorers with 10.
Luther finishes the 2017-18 campaign with an overall record of 5-20, 0-16 in the Iowa Conference. Buena Vista solidified third place in the league standings with a mark of 10-6, 17-8 overall.
