Luther picked up its first win of the season, an 85-59 victory over St. Mary's University (MN) here in the Regents Center. The Norse blistered the nets in the first half, connecting on nearly 58 percent of their attempts and held a 47-27 advantage at halftime. The second half was a bit closer as the Norse outscored the Cardinals 38-32 en route to the victory.
Luther did most of its damage from behind the three-point line, connecting on 11-of-25 attempts. James Kappus led this long range attack with four treys, en route to a career high 20 points. Jared Nicolaisen and Rahul Bagga also tallied double digits with 13 and 12 respectively. Christian Wright and McCoy Matthias were next with eight points each.
Defensively, Luther held St. Mary's to 36.4 percent from the field and also won the battle of the boards 42-30. Nicolaisen led the team with six rebounds, while Brevin Walker dished out a career high six assists.
Luther will take its 1-1 record to Bethany Lutheran College, Mankato, Minn., on Tuesday, Nov. 21. This non-conference game will start at 7:00 p.m.
