Luther improved to 10-1 following a sweep of Bethel University (MN) this afternoon.
In game one, The Norse scored 11 runs on 15 hits and defeated the Royals 11-10. Czenvic Rojer had a big game going 2-for-4 at the plate and driving in four runs. Rojer hit a two-run home run in Luther's four-run first inning, and drove in two more runs with a double in the three-run sixth. Mitch Knippenberg was 3-for-4 with three RBI. Knippenberg drove in a run in the first and also hit a two-run home run in the fourth. Alex Webber (2-for-5), Jon Opdahl (2-for-3) Bryce Hingst (2-for-3) and Cody Reimer (2-for-4) all tallied multiple hit games.
Jake Halverson picked up the win in relief. Halverson pitched the final two innings and held the Royals scoreless, allowing one hit, walking two and striking out one.
In the nightcap, Luther scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh en route to a 5-4 come-from-behind victory.
Trailing 4-2 entering the sixth, the Norse pulled to within a run when Webber drove in Cody Reimer with a double to left field. In the final frame, Opdahl, Rojer and Joe Silversmith all drew walks and loaded the bases. Opdahl scored on a wild pitch. Hingst followed with a walk that load the bases for a second time. Zach Hendrikson drove in the game winner with a sacrifice fly to center field, that scored pinch runner Jordan True. Weber, Rojer and Silversmith all had two hits and were credited with one RBI.
Twice the Norse defense turned 5-4-3 double plays that got starting pitcher Nate Beckman out of an inning. Beckman went the distance en route to his second win of the year. Beckman allowed four runs on eight hits, walked two and struck out four.
The win was the fifth in a row for the Norse. Luther will face another Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) opponent on Saturday, when they take on Gustavus Adolphus in a nine inning contest.
