A walk-off walk by Jon Opdahl secured a 16-15 victory for the Norse over Valley City State University (ND) in today's nightcap.
The Norse held a 7-3 lead after two innings. Luther scored all seven runs in the second frame capped off with a grand slam home run by Czenvic Rojer.
Valley City State responded with eight unanswered runs in the next four innings and held a 11-7 lead heading into the bottom half of the fifth. Luther retook the lead (13-11) scoring three runs in both the fifth and sixth innings. Valley City State answered with two runs in the eighth and ninth and held a 15-13 lead as the Norse headed into the bottom of the ninth.
A base hit bunt by Aldon Severson, followed by a single by Rojer, set the table for the Norse come-from-behind victory. Four walks later, Alex Weber scored on the Opdahl base-on-balls that secured the victory.
As a team, Luther scored its 16 runs on 19 hits and played error free baseball. Valley City State tallied 18 hits and committed five errors that led to six unearned runs.
Rojer was 3-for-6 leading the team with five RBI. Severson, Joel Martin and Opdahl were all credited with two RBI. Martin was 4-for-4 and scored three times.
Ben Voss (1-1) picked up the win in relief. Voss retired the two batters he faced in the top of the ninth. Blake Peterson threw the first four innings and allowed 10 runs on 10 hits. Nate Beckman pitched 4 1/3 innings allowing five runs on eight hits.
The win gives Luther an overall record of 5-3. Valley City State fell to 9-18.
The Norse have one game schedule tomorrow, a nine inning contest against Carleton College. First pitch is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. MT.
