Luther College Sociology students attended the Iowa Sociological Association meeting in Dubuque on April 28, 2017 and took away some top prizes.
Madie Miller '19, won First Prize in the Sociological Imaginative Pictures category. Her theme, titled Poverty and Foreign Aid depicts "Misconceptions about the economically poor and the misguided goals of mission work are perpetuated by the saturation of images of people in distress following catastrophes. [...] The image shows the power of a Haitian mother in a simple moment as she fixes her daughter's hair."
Cade Bolen '17, won the Ward Reynoldson award for Best Paper in Criminology with his paper titled "Labeling and Stigmatization in Drug Addiction: How Labels Influence Our Perceptions".
