New Student Information

See how our campus-wide wireless Internet, Luther's computer labs, and how Luther's residence halls give you the tools you need to stay connected.

  • Where is wireless Internet access available?

The Luther College Wireless Network (LCWireless) covers all residence halls, most administrative and classroom buildings, and several outdoor areas.  For best performance, Library and Information Services (LIS) recommends that you use a computer capable of dual-band Wi-Fi on Luther's wireless network.

More information is available on the LIS website.

  • What are my cable TV options?

Basic cable is provided in each residence hall social lounge. Students can purchase individual room Dish Network cable through Sims TV. There are several packages available to choose from for $25/month. Cable service provides between 30-42 local and cable channels. Required equipment: Dual Band Streaming Device which must use 5ghz band or risk losing wifi signal from Luther College. Acceptable devices include Roku 3600R, Roku Premiere, Roku Premiere+, Fire TV Stick, Fire TV Cube. These devices can be found at the Walmart in Decorah or on Amazon. Please contact Ryan at 563-380-1418 with questions and to get set up.

  • Is there a data outlet in each room?

Ylvisaker, Brandt, Olson, Larsen, Farwell, Baker Village, and Norby Global House provide data outlets in all student rooms. In Miller, Dieseth, College Apartments, Prairie Houses, and the Sustainability House network is provided via wireless only, and wired data outlets are not available. More information is available from the Help Desk.

  • Are there computer labs in the residence halls?

Dieseth, Miller, Larsen, Farwell, Ylvisaker, Brandt, and Olson feature a computer lab, with a printer, that is open 24 hours a day, except during break periods.

Preus Library has computer labs with Windows and Mac workstations, black & white and color printers, and also the Digital Media Center. Other buildings on campus have computer labs accessible to students during building hours. Details are located at Computer Labs and Classrooms.

  • Do I need a phone or answering machine?

Due to the number of students on campus with personal cell phones, Luther College no longer supplies student rooms with individual telephones. An emergency phone is located on each residence hall floor in the hallway. Students desiring an individually-assigned number, a telephone for their room, and a voice mail box may request one via the Library and Information Systems website.
